CITY OF AKRON AWARDING $560,000 TO SOCIAL SERVICE PROGRAMS

Mayor Donald Plusquellic announced today the City of Akron's proposed award of $560,000 in Community Development Block Grant Funds to be distributed among local agencies to assist in the Community Development Neighborhoods throughout the City. These funds come to the City from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The contract awards proposed for fifteen agencies will be authorized by legislation being introduced to Akron City Council.. Proposed contracts for Social Services are:

The City of Akron has a long history of providing funds for social services in support of the capital improvements and housing and economic development activities provided in the Community Development neighborhoods. The social service programs have been very successful in providing a broad range of supportive services to the youth, elderly, low and moderate income residents in the Community Development neighborhoods.

Mayor Plusquellic said today, "These agencies provide valuable services to our citizens. The services are meant to complement our coordinated, concentrated approach to neighborhood improvement. This approach has resulted in dramatic improvements in the City's CD neighborhoods and the City as a whole."

Akron City Council will receive the legislation at tonight’s meeting.
