Akron, OHIO, July 7, 1999 - Lee Owens, head football coach at The University of Akron, was introduced as Honorary Chair of Kids' NewsDay by Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic today at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron.

Kids' NewsDay is a community fundraising project that benefits kids at Children's Hospital. This special wrap-around section of The Beacon Journal on September 10 will features stories on health and safety education, Children's Hospital patients and staff, plus valuable coupons and a chance to win a $500 U.S. Savings Bond.

Throughout his career, Coach Owens has always believed in promoting a positive approach to education and athletics. "Since Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron is such a true asset for our community, I'm especially honored to serve as Honorary Chair for this year's Kids' NewsDay event," he said.

Coach Owens is a popular speaker, presenting a wide range of topics, from attitude and confidence to motivation and success. He has worked with Akron's youth for more than a decade.

Hospital President William H. Considine, a distinguished alumni from The University of Akron, said, "Naming Coach Owens as Honorary Chair can only enhance what Kids' NewsDay is all about: education and community involvement."

Area corporations, organizations and individuals can purchase this special edition for $1 at locations throughout Summit County.

Kids' NewsDay editions can also be purchased in advance to distribute to employees and customers, or to sell to businesses as point of purchase locations.
