Communicable Disease Control
includes consulting, screening, and treatment services for
clients and contacts with Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Tuberculosis, and community
threatening diseases such as Hepatitis, and food-borne illnesses. HIV tests are available
to anyone anonymously or confidentially. Immunizations to protect for specific
communicable diseases are available for those working in high risk occupations or entry to
colleges and vocational education programs. Travel immunizations are available based on
CDC recommendations for travel destinations. Fees for adult immunizations reflect the cost
to the department.
Hypertension Screening and Control provides blood pressure screening to detect
elevated blood pressure and also to monitor those diagnosed with hypertension. Clients may
or may not have private physicians. Hypertension visits and/or medication is available for
a $5 fee if eligibility requirements are met.
Alcoholism Program is provided by the Department's
Alcohol/Substance/Counseling Program in cooperation with the public health nursing staff
when a client is on medication, and should be monitored. Education, counseling and
treatment are available.
Women's Health Services
includes pap smears, pelvic exam, breast self-exam teaching, health
history, counseling, referral for services not provided by Nursing Division, and follow-up
as appropriate.
Refugee Program provides health screening and treatment for
newly arrived refugees in the Akron area. Interpreters are provided to assist in their
health care and any referrals that are necessary. The Health Department works closely with
area agencies to assist refugees during their transition into the community.
