Our office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through

We have installed a "drive-by" meter reading
system in all residential, commercial and industrial accounts. A meter reader drives a
vehicle equipped with a reading device that automatically collects meter readings. We use
the meter reading to produce your bill. We installed automated meters in residential
accounts from 2003 - 2005. We installed automated meters in commercial and industrial
accounts from 2008 - 2009.
Although we can read your water meter remotely, there are several reasons why customers
with meters inside their homes should periodically read their meter. First, you might be
interested in knowing just how much water you use in a day. By reading your meter at the
beginning and the end of the day, you can compare the two totals. This will tell you how
much water you used. Another reason is to check for leaks. If you turn off all the taps in
your house and look at your meter and it is still running, chances are you have a leak
somewhere. [Click here for
instructions on how to read your water meter]
Note: We charge $25.00 for visual or handheld meter
readings including readings requested by a customer out of route and meters not converted
to automated meter reading. We charge $50.00 to remove water from a meter vault for
reading, maintaining or installing a meter or ert (electronic
receiver/transmitter).

1. Meter Testing
Meters are tested based on the type of meter, size, and
annual usage. Typically, meters are tested every two years. The process takes
approximately 1.5 to 2.0 hours to complete. Your water service will not be interrupted as
a result of the testing process. At times, you may experience cloudy water at the
conclusion of the testing process due primarily to old water pipes that have built-up
sediments. Running your water for a few minutes will usually clear this up.
You will be notified before the testing procedure is
performed. We adhere to and comply with all safety and site-specific conditions that you
may have (i.e. hard hats, safety glasses, guest badges, etc.).
The testing provides us with a comprehensive look at the
performance and accuracy o the meter at pre-described flow rates. Testing accuracy ranges
from 98% to 102%. Meters that average out to less than or greater than the expected
accuracy will be overhauled and/or replaced.
The City owns meters ranging from 5/8" to 1" used
for domestic or irrigation purposes. All other meters are owned by the customer and
maintained by the City of Akron at the owner's expense.
2. Meter and ert Maintenance
Meters are typically maintained on-site. The process can
take anywhere from one-half to two full days. The process requires us to make a minimum of
two trips to your property to complete the task. Some discoloration in your water may
occur as a result of [LK3]old pipes. Your meter will operate more efficiently and
accurately as a result of this process. You will receive more accurate billing and notice
better flow capabilities. We install or replace erts (electronic receiver/transmitter) on
site.
The property owner is responsible for maintenance on meter
settings, interior plumbing and meter vaults.

4. Pressure Problems
If you are experiencing pressure problems, you may request
that we perform a pressure survey. We require the property owner to schedule the
appointment because expenses may be incurred to correct the problem. Schedule an
appointment by calling 330-375-2443. After the procedure is completed, a letter will be
sent to the property owner advising them what course of action to take to enhance
pressure/volume.
The pressure survey consists of the following checkpoints:
- Pressure at the meter
- Flow test at the meter
- Assessment of all plumbing fixtures
- Assessment of pipes
The most common reasons for low pressure are:
- Underground leak(s)
- Old (clogged) pipes
- Interior leak(s)
- Clogged water meter
- Improperly functioning backflow device or pressure
regulators
5. Field Inspections
Industrial Meter Workers typically do not perform
inspections in large buildings (i.e. factories, hospitals, schools, etc.) due to the time
required to perform such inspections. Maintenance personnel or on-site management may call
330-375-2027 for recommendations.
6. Backflow
Inspections
We typically perform inspections on retrofits and repairs.
Please call us at 330-375-2443 or the Utilities Engineering Division for additional
information.
7. Meter Change-Outs
The average meter life is 15 - 25 years. The City of Akron
purchases meters 1-1/2" to 4". Please call us at 330-375-2443 to arrange to pick
up the meter. The owner is responsible for installation.
Please notify us prior to any modifications to ad-on or
deduct meters. Failure to do so may result in an inability to process credits to your
account.
